Fast Facts: Geneva is hoping Friday is the night that their top returning starter off of last year’s Class 4A fourth-place finisher, 6-foot-8 forward Bennett Fuzak, returns after missing a month due to a concussion. Fuzak’s absence was another in a string of unfortunate events for the Vikings. Their top three returners have missed time. Loudon Vollbrecht tore his ACL during football and Sean Chambers missed the first few weeks of the season with a broken hand, also suffered in football. But the Vikings have soldiered on, namely Vedder, who is averaging 10 points. Fuzak was posting 18.3 points a game when he went down. Geneva features a ton of length. The Navigato brothers are each 6-foot-5, while Vedder is 6-foot-7. The Vikings are coming off of the best season in school history, as they tied the school record with 30 wins and won their first-ever state trophy. The Saints have had a similar injury issue. Point guard James McQuillan is still out with a broken foot, but otherwise they are close to full strength. The injuries combined with a tough schedule have conspired to leave East at 8-6 thus far. They have close losses to ranked teams such as St. Joseph, Glenbard West and Crete-Monee. Hardy leads the team in scoring, despite being a sophomore. Soccer standout DiLeonardi is one of the Saints’ key defenders.
