Dozens Quarantine After Exposure To Coronavirus At Geneva High

District 304 officials canceled in-person classes Thursday and Friday after 120 students were required to quarantine, according to a report.

GENEVA, IL — Geneva High School reverted to remote learning this week after more than 100 students were required to quarantine, according to the Chicago Tribune.

There were nine active coronavirus cases at the high school, as of April 9, according to District 304’s coronavirus dashboard. District 304 Superintendent Kent Mutchler said that included four students who attended in-person classes, the report states.

Due to those four cases, 120 students were required to quarantine before returning to classrooms, the Tribune reports. That represents about 6.6 percent of the 1,800-plus students at Geneva High School.

District 304 officials called off in-person classes Thursday and Friday as they “needed the time to problem-solve,” Mutchler told the Chicago Tribune.

Coronavirus Cases On The Rise In Kane County For Past 3 Weeks

Illinois public health officials last month revised guidelines for social distancing at schools, reducing the minimum space required between students from 6 feet to 3 feet. However, students are still required to quarantine if they are within 6 feet of someone who has tested positive.

“Drastically” fewer students would have been required to quarantine if both guidelines matched, Mutchler told the Chicago Tribune.
