GENEVA, IL — Three weeks after cancelling its signature Swedish Days Festival, the Geneva Chamber of Commerce put an end to any hopes that the Geneva Arts Fair could still go on. The chamber, along with its event coordinator EM Events, scrapped the fair due to fears for visitors’ and artists’ safety amid the coronavirus pandemic, according to a news release. The event was scheduled to run July 25-26.

“While this decision was difficult, we felt that it is for the safety of our Geneva Arts Fair visitors and participants,” Geneva Chamber of Commerce President Paula Schmidt said in the release.

“We know the Geneva Arts Fair is very popular and looked forward to, not only by the artists, but the public as well,” Schmidt said, adding chamber officials are exploring ways to help artists display their work throughout the city in July.

The Geneva Chamber of Commerce is also trying to schedule small events throughout the summer to give residents at least a small taste of the annual Swedish Days Festival, which had run interrupted for almost 70 years. The festival was scheduled to be held June 23-28.
