GENEVA, IL — Stores at the Geneva Commons shopping center closed early Wednesday after a Snapchat message said they would be targeted by looters, according to Geneva police.

Protesters are demonstrating Wednesday afternoon in downtown Batavia and some business owners are worried the group may march north on Route 31 into Geneva, but police have seen “no credible evidence” that the city will be targeted, said Brian Maduzia, commander of patrol operations for the Geneva Police Department.

The mall’s managers have posted no trespassing signs, and checkpoints are in place in the area to keep potential looters away, Maduzia said. The Geneva Police Department also has additional officers patrolling the area Wednesday, he said.

“Hopefully people get the message that they don't want anyone on their property today causing trouble,” Maduzia said.
