Just Around the Corner Week of August Sixth

A roundup of family-oriented events and entertainment in Geneva in the week ahead.

The days of back to school sales and store displays of Fall merchandise are here. Summer vacation is drawing to a close, much to the relief of beleaguered parents and the dismay of school-aged children everywhere. But before we say good-bye to Summer, there are still a few activities you should consider before the cooler days of autumn are upon us. If you haven’t found the time to make it to the pool or a sprayground with the family, then the Geneva Park District’s National Night Out on August 7th is the perfect opportunity to cool off and meet the neighbors at either Sunset Pool or Mill Creek Pool.

The Geneva Park District has several events lined up for this week. The first is the National Night Out being held at Sunset Pool and Mill Creek Pool on Tuesday, August 7th, between 6:00 AM and 8:00 PM. Admission is free. The event is part of a national effort begun in 1984 to familiarize the public with police programs in their community and to promote police/public partnerships to help create safer neighborhoods. It’s been held annually in participating communities on the first Tuesday of August. The gathering offers a great opportunity to get to know your neighbors and members of local law enforcement in a relaxed setting. Be sure to ask about the Geneva Citizen’s Police Academy.

The Geneva Friendly Seniors Monthly Luncheon is open to residents aged 50 and above. This month the luncheon is Wednesday, August 8th, between 12:30 PM and 3:00 PM. The registration fee is $6 after August 3rd. The luncheon and ice cream social takes place at the Sunset Recreation Center at 710 Western Avenue. This is an opportunity to meet old and new friends and to enjoy a delicious meal and a game of Bingo or Tripoley.

Find out if your little angel is interested in cheerleading. An informational meeting on the Geneva Angels Cheer and Poms program will be held on Thursday, August 9th, between 5:30 and 6:30 PM at the Sunset Community Center at 710 Western Ave. The program teaches the skills necessary for middle school and high school cheerleading squads. The girls practice cheerleading and dance routines over the winter in preparation for park district conference competitions and perform at community events during the summer.

The final Teen Night of the season is at Sunset Pool on Thursday, August 9th, between 8:00 PM and 10:00 PM. Teen night is open to 6th through 8th graders. Admission is $5 for residents and $6 for non-residents. Wear a plain white t-shirt and get a color powder packet to throw at your friends, who should also be wearing white t-shirts. You should all wind up with multi-colored t-shirts. At least that’s the plan. Maybe this is how tie-dyed shirts started. Food and refreshments are also available.

The new interactive sprayground features a water slide, a sprinkling flower, spouting ground sprayers, a squirting snail, a super soaking interactive water cannon, and a playful water parrot. The pool area also has a locker room, showers, hospitality room, and concessions. Twilight admission is currently $4 per resident and $5 for non-resident.

National S’Mores Day Campfire is Friday, August 10th, between 6:30 PM and 7:30 PM at Peck Farm at 4038 Kaneville Road. The registration fee is $5 for residents and $7 for non-residents. The classic, sticky, gooey campfire treat and the traditional campfire too. Need I say S’More.

Sunset Dance Company placement takes place on Sunday, August 12th starting at 1:00 PM and ending at 3:00 PM. This is an opportunity for your tiny dancers aged 5 and up to learn to dance at a higher level of expectation. Classes are held three or more times a week and lessons are affordable. All skill levels are welcome and the dancers will perform at a number of events and competitions.
