Just Around the Corner Week of August Twentieth

A roundup of family-oriented events and entertainment in Geneva in the week ahead

School starts Wednesday, August 22nd, which means summer vacation officially ends even though we have over a month of summer left. To soften the blow, a four-day Labor Day weekend holiday awaits beginning Friday, August 31st. The Geneva Park District will spend the next couple of weeks doing the annual facilities cleanup, so there’s not much going on there. The week winds up with the Geneva Concours d’Elegance on Sunday, August 26th. For those who don’t speak French, that means there will be a lot of swanky, classic cars on display in downtown Geneva.

The main event this week is the Geneva Concours d'Elegance held on Sunday, August 26th, between the hours of 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM with the awards ceremony at 3:00 PM. This event is free and open to the public. Classic, elegant automobiles will be on display along Third Street and many of the intersecting side streets in downtown Geneva. This year’s event will highight Mercedes Benz SLs, Chrysler 300s, steam-powered automobiles, and a special display for the 70th anniversary of the Chicago region Sports Car Club of America (SCCA). There will still be many other automobiles on display in addition to those featured in this year’s show.

This event will benefit the Living Well Cancer Resource Center in Geneva.

The Herrington Inn celebrates its 25th anniversary with a celebration at Herrington Inn Plaza on Thursday, August 23rd, starting at 5:30 PM and ending at 8:30 PM. Entertainment is provided by the Jake Mack Band. Hors d’oeuvres will be served and a cash bar is available. A watercolor painting of the Herrington by Dennis Gramlich will be sold at auction. Tickets are $40 and available through the Herrington web site. Net proceeds will benefit the Geneva History Museum.

Unless you’re in the custodial business, there won’t be too much to do at Sunset Community Center over the next couple of weeks as the Geneva Park District conducts its annual cleanup. With school starting, Sunset Pool will have shortened weekday hours, from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM, before it closes for the season on Monday, September 3rd. The Butterfly House at Peck Farm will remain open until mid-September. The Stone Creek miniature golf course at Wheeler Park will be open evenings August 22nd through August 24th from 6:00 PM until 10:00 PM and after that only on weekends through October 8th. Saturday hours will then be from 11:00 AM until 10:00 PM and Sunday hours will be 11:00 AM until 7:00 PM.
