Mail-In Voting Up 566% Over 2016 In Kane County

Almost 63,000 Kane County voters cast mail-in ballots during the first month of early voting, up from 9,424 total mail-in votes in 2016.

KANE COUNTY, IL — Nearly 117,000 people in Kane County cast their ballots during the first month of early voting, representing more than two-thirds of the county’s vote total in 2016.

As of Oct. 25, mail-in voting was up more than 550 percent in 2020, according to Kane County Clerk John Cunningham. Almost 63,000 voters have mailed in ballots through the first month, compared to 9,424 total mail-in ballots cast during the 2016 election, Cunningham said, calling the turnout so far "amazing."

The clerk said more than 53,000 people cast their votes early in person by Oct. 25, which is about three-quarters of the 72,537 early votes cast four years ago, the clerk said.

Just over 172,000 votes were cast in Kane County during the 2016 general election.

Matt Dietrich, a spokesperson for the Illinois State Board of Elections, said early voting totals across Illinois are about double what they were at this point in the 2016 election.

More than 2.3 million people in Illinois have voted early, as of Tuesday, including nearly 1.3 million who completed mail-in ballots, according to state election data.

“We had a lot more people get out earlier this year, which is good,” Dietrich said, adding he expects the “heaviest” wave of early voting to occur this week.
