Parents Protest For Full-Time In-Person Learning In Geneva 304

District 304 is operating on a hybrid schedule for the rest of the school year, with all students learning remotely on Fridays.

GENEVA, IL — More than 100 parents and students were set to continue their protest Monday against Geneva District 304’s decision to have all students learn remotely every Friday for the rest of the school year.

Geneva Parents United for Students gathered ahead of the school board’s meeting Monday night for its fifth demonstration to urge officials to reconsider their decision, according to a news release.

The group was scheduled to picket at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Coultrap Educational Services Building, 227 N. 4th St. The school board’s meeting started at 7 p.m.

Geneva District 304 started the 2020-21 school year with a hybrid learning plan that split students into two groups, with each spending two or three days in classrooms each week. Since the end of October, students have been in classrooms no more than two days per week.

The District 304 board then voted Jan. 11 to only offer remote learning each Friday through the end of May, meaning students are set to spend less than 50 percent of the remaining school days in classrooms.

As of March 8, there were still 59 school days remaining on Geneva District 304's academic calendar. Students who signed up for in-person learning are scheduled to spend just 24 of those school days in classrooms, the calendar shows.

There were eight active cases of the coronavirus Friday among students and staff in Geneva 304, according to the district’s dashboard. There was one active case at Geneva High School, four cases within Geneva’s two middle schools and three cases at the elementary level.
