Third Street Utility Projects: Lane Restrictions, Dates, More

Dates and times of upcoming projects happening on Third Street, and what the City is advising motorists and pedestrians.

GENEVA, IL — The City of Geneva announced Thursday that Third Street near the Union Pacific Railway tracks in the downtown area will be down to one lane beginning 9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16 to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17 while Western Utility crews move Sprint's underground lines to prepare for the future Union Pacific Third Main Line project. According to a release from the City, Third Street will be reduced to one lane from Crescent Place to Cheever Avenue, adding that drivers should use extra caution if they must travel through the work zone as flaggers will be directing traffic.

The City said motorists are encouraged to avoid this area and can use the Route 31 underpass as an alternate route. However, those downtown will be able to access the Third Street Commuter Parking Deck, but the outside parking spaces located on the south side of the structure will be closed during hours of construction.

Pedestrians will be able to cross the Metra tracks during the project, and trains will continue running as normal, according to the release.

On Wednesday, Sept. 18, Utility Dynamics will start an underground electric feeder relocation project for Union Pacific near Route 31 and Third Street, closing the street's east side sidewalk, the release said. The City encourages pedestrians to use open sidewalks and crosswalks near the work zone, as cutting through Duke & Lee's Service, 609 S. Third St., isn't advised due to construction, which is expected to take 3 weeks depending on weather.
