College of DuPage to Host Renowned 'The Trouble with My Name' Poet Javier Ávila

The Latino Outreach Center at College of DuPage will host internationally recognized professor and poet Javier Ávila for a virtual presentation of his popular show, “The Trouble with My Name,” from 1 to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13.
This event is free and open to the public.
“The Trouble with My Name” is a presentation that blends storytelling, comedy and poetry to shed light on the American Latino experience. It is a history lesson on Hispanic heritage, an examination of discrimination in America, and a celebration of Puerto Rican culture and poetry. Participants will learn about the value of diversity, equity and inclusion as it pertains to their worldviews.

Ávila is a professor in the English department at Northampton Community College whose work with students earned him the 2015 Pennsylvania Professor of the Year Award, which was sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. He has also earned recognition for literary work, including the PEN Club’s National Poetry Award and the Olga Nolla Poetry Award.
