"All babies born during February at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital will receive a special gift – a red knitted hat to raise awareness of heart disease.

Ethan, the son of Trinity Amato and Tim Wangler of Glen Ellyn, was one of the first babies born at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital to receive a red hat in recognition of the American Heart Association’s “Little Hats, Big Hearts” campaign. Ethan, who is pictured with his big sister Bryn, was born at 9:55 am Jan. 31 weighing 8 lbs. and 1 ounce and is 20.5 inches long.

The “Little Hats, Big Hearts” campaign is held in conjunction with the American Heart Association to educate the public about heart disease and congenital heart defects, which is the most common type of birth defect in the country.

The red hats, which were knitted by volunteers, come in all sizes, even small enough to fit the tiny heads of babies at Good Samaritan Hospital’s Level III neonatal intensive care unit.

“The Little Hats, Big Hearts initiative is a great way to raise awareness, provide resources and inspire parents to take their family’s heart health to heart. Congenital heart defects affect more than 40,000 newborn babies each year, so anything that we can do to educate families is beneficial to everyone,” said Dr. Eleanor Ross, pediatric cardiologist.
