Glen Ellyn Cannabis Referendum Question Projected To Pass

The referendum question read, "Shall the Village permit the sale of recreational cannabis within Village limits?"

GLEN ELLYN, IL — A referendum question about recreational cannabis that appeared on Glen Ellyn voters' ballots is projected to pass after a close vote. The non-binding referendum question read: "Shall the Village permit the sale of recreational cannabis within Village limits?"

With 100 percent of precincts reporting, 50.55 percent or 6,501 voters had voted "yes" to the referendum question and 49.45 percent or 6,359 voters had voted "no" to the referendum question.

A deluge of mail-in votes cast this election amid the coronavirus pandemic — many of which will not be counted tonight — makes this election unlike any in the past. Officials have two weeks post-election to count all provisional votes.

It Could Be Weeks Until Illinois Knows Election Results

As of Saturday, DuPage County Clerk Jean Kaczmarek said there were still more than 39,000 mail-in ballots outstanding in the county.

The village board had voted in November 2019 to impose a moratorium ordinance on the decision while they observed the effect of recreational cannabis sales on neighboring municipalities. That moratorium was later extended until Dec. 15, 2020 to allow for the board to condsider the results of the referendum question.

Recreational cannabis became legal in Illinois on Jan. 1, 2020. Nearby Naperville recently voted to permit cannabis sales after posing a similar referendum question in March in which 53 percent of voters favored cannabis sales.
