Glen Ellyn Gas Station Approved Despite Heated Protests from Villagers
The controversial Shell gas station at 825 N. Main St. in Glen Ellyn was approved by village officials after opposition from residents.

GLEN ELLYN, IL — A Glen Ellyn gas station proposal that has caused much public outcry from residents has been approved by the village board, but with some compromise for residents, village officials said. Shell will move forward with the construction of the gas station at 825 N. Main Street.
A statement from the Village of Glen Ellyn said the board took into consideration many of the comments made by residents who were fiercely in opposition of the Shell station. The gas station and convenience store, which was originally to be open 24 hours, will now be closed between midnight and 5 a.m. daily. During its closure, the gas station’s canopy lights must be turned off. The gas station’s contractors, True North LLC will also be required to provide Glen Ellyn with an access easement for additional landscaping, the statement said.
Residents fiercely opposed Glen Ellyn’s plan to build a gas station and convenience store at the intersection of Main and St. Charles. Villagers expressed concern about potential crime, wasted money and liquor sales at the gas station. The site has previously been occupied by three other gas stations.
