Murray was taken to a nearby hospital and later died from his injuries. After the incident, Aydelotte was taken into custody and held at DuPage County Jail on $4 million bail.
DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement, "Nearly three-and-a-half years ago, James Aydelotte brutally murdered John Murray. After punching him in the face, stabbing him in the leg and stomping on his head, Mr. Aydelotte then lied to authorities claiming Mr. Murray’s injuries were due to a fall down the stairs. This afternoon, Judge McGimpsey gave Mr. Aydelotte a well-earned thirty-year sentence. While the sentenced handed down today will not bring John back to those who loved him, perhaps it will help them in some way as they continue their lives knowing that the man responsible his murder will spend the next three decades of this life behind bars."
