The village board voted in Nov. 2019 to place a moratorium ordinance on whether to allow recreational cannabis sales. The moratorium ordinance was placed to allow the village to see the effect of recreational cannabis on nearby municipalities. The moratorium ordinance was recently extended until Dec. 15, 2020, so the village can consider the referendum question results before taking an official vote.
Recreational cannabis sales became legal in Illinois as of Jan. 1, 2020. Nearby Naperville recently voted to permit cannabis sales after posing a similar referendum question in March in which 53 percent of voters favored cannabis sales.
