League of Women Voters Celebrates 100th Anniversary

Events, lawn signs and voting advocacy

Glen Ellyn, IL — The League of Women Voters is celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment on 8/26, granting women the right to vote with several events and a village proclamation. Congress has designated August 2020 as National Woman’s Suffrage Month.

  • Village Hall proclamation. In their monthly village meeting, Village of Glen Ellyn presented a proclamation commemorating the 100 anniversary of the 19th Amendment and showing their support for the work of the League of Women Voters of Glen Ellyn. The proclamation will be signed by Diane McGinley, Village President.
  • 100th Anniversary window display at String Theory Yarn Company. The display includes a suffragist-era dress with a purple, white and gold “Votes for Women “sash, a 100th Anniversary Quilt created by LWVGE member Lynn Bruno featuring suffragette colors. There are also posters of the history of the League, suffragette bios and the text of the 19th amendment. The Bookstore is selling women’s history books and the window will showcase a few of the selections. The Glen Ellyn Library also has a suffrage display of books.
  • 100 lawn signs celebrating 100 years of voting have been popping up at League members homes from Glen Ellyn to Geneva. The sign utilizes an original suffrage poster and adds the 100 year commemorative logo from the League.
  • League Community Meeting (via Zoom) was held on 8/26 featuring DuPage County Clerk Jean Karzmarek. The meeting kicked off the season for the League and Jean Karzmarek held a talk on vote by mail and answer questions from the audience. A link to the presentation can be found at lwvge.org/events.
