Man Accused Of Fleeing Fatal Crash With Bicyclist In Lombard

Police say Norris Watt, 25, had alcohol, ecstasy, amphetamine and cannabis in his system when he fatally struck a bicyclist.

LOMBARD, IL — A Chicago man faces felony charges after police say he left the scene of a crash that killed a bicyclist in Lombard Sunday. Police say Norris Watt, 25, of Chicago, had alcohol, ecstasy, amphetamine and cannabis in his system at the time of the crash, which claimed the life of Troy Young, 41.

Police were called to the scene of Roosevelt Road and Stewart Avenue around 11 p.m. Sunday for a report of someone who had been hit by a car. When they got to the scene, they found Young, who was pronounced dead.

According to the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office, Watt was driving at more than 80 miles per hour when he hit Young and did not stop after the collision.

Watt was pulled over in Oak Brook just before 11:30 p.m. and taken into custody.

“As I have said many times in the past, this case, like all alleged DUI cases, was 100% avoidable,” DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a news release. “With so many mind-altering substances allegedly in his system at the time of the crash, there is absolutely no reason why Mr. Watt should have been behind the wheel of a car that night. What I find particularly disturbing are the allegations that instead of rendering aid to his victim, Mr. Watt fled the scene, leaving a dying man behind."

“I would like to express my sympathies to Mr. Young’s family on their loss,” Lombard Police Chief Roy Newton said in a statement. Newton added, “Thanks to the cooperative efforts of the Lombard and Oak Brook Police Departments the alleged offender is now in custody."

Watt has been charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident and aggravated DUI in connection with the crash.
