On Monday, the Glen Ellyn Village Board unanimously approved a developer's plan to demolish two office buildings and build a Panera at Roosevelt Road and Nicoll Way. The Panera currently on Roosevelt Road will move to this new location.

The plan was proposed by Clark Street Real Estate. Village Planning and Development Director Staci Hulseberg discussed traffic issues with the village trustees, but there was no mention of the other Panera.

Hulseberg later told Patch by phone that the restaurant will be moved to a new location, meaning there will only be one Panera in the area.

The new Panera location will have a drive-through, while the existing restaurant does not have this feature.

The village will require the developer to build a sidewalk and retaining wall along Nicoll Way and Pershing Avenue, but the village will reimburse the developer up to $52,000.

Panera restaurants operate as franchises, but the company does not allow people to open just a single site.

"Panera Bread does not sell single-unit franchises, so it is not possible to open just one bakery-cafe. Rather, we have chosen to develop by selling market areas which require the franchise developer to open a number of units, typically 15 bakery-cafes in a period of 6 years," according to the Panera corporate website.

An applicant must have a net worth of $7.5 million to be considered for Panera franchise ownership.

Village President Alex Demos asked the developer to be "respectful and compassionate" to residents near the construction site.
