Talk Scheduled: "History Of Prostitution And The Story Of Brothels In Glen Ellyn"
A local historian will discuss how prostitution shaped the village at a Glen Ellyn Historical Society event
Author and local historian Dan Anderson will present the history of prostitution in Glen Ellyn at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 11. The event will be held at the Glen Ellyn History Center at 800 N. Main St.
He will talk about how Madame Rieck moved her brothel from Chicago to the village, and how he believes this spurred Glen Ellyn's growth.
"Madame Rieck’s clientele were wealthy, influential people who were in a good position to promote the town. And promote they did! In just 28 years, from 1900 to 1928, our population increased by 850%," Anderson said in a report to a village committee.
