4th Of July Fireworks 2021 Canceled In Highland Park

Highland Park's traditional Fourth of July events may be canceled, but there are several other ways you can celebrate Independence Day.

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — Though coronavirus cases continue to drop across the country and the number of those who are fully vaccinated continues to rise, many Independence Day celebrations have once again been canceled, modified or shifted to a remote format due to the pandemic.

In late April, Highland Park city and park district officials announced their decision to cancel traditional July 4 community events, including the city's traditional Independence Day parade and FourthFest family event, citing "current and possible COVID-related restrictions."

The traditional fireworks show at Wolters Field has been postponed to Labor Day weekend, with the finale of the Bitter Jester Music Festival likewise delayed by two months.

As an alternative to a physical procession, city officials have announced plans for a "Virtual Independence Day Parade" to be featured on municipal social media accounts. Submissions must be 15 seconds or shorter, with no advertising, political messages or material that is not suitable for an audience of all ages.

On July 3, the Park District of Highland Park is hosting a series of family fitness challenges in the morning and a sunset drive-in screening of the movie "The Sandlot" at the Recreation Center of Highland Park. The district is also hosting a "Virtual Fireworks and Float" on July 4 at Hidden Creek AquaPark, where attendees will be treated to a video of a fireworks show on a big screen.

While several north suburban communities have canceled their 2021 firework plans altogether or, like Highland Park, postponed them by a couple months, fireworks are scheduled to take place July 3 at Gillson Park in Wilmette and July 4 at Techny Prairie Park and Fields in Northbrook, Deerpath Community Park in Lake Forest and various locations around Lincolnshire.

Due to the pandemic, counties or cities may adjust or cancel events at the last minute, so double-check with organizers. Know of other events in the area? Post them on the Highland Park Patch calendar or share details on our free Neighbor Post feature.
