Armed Robbery During Drug Deal On Deerfield Road: Blotter
Fight with knife and baton follows driving complaint; felony charges for accused serial shoplifter: Highland Park-Highwood Police Blotters

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — The following information comes from the Highland Park and Highwood police departments and public records as a record of incidents reported to the police and of those arrested by police. Criminal charges represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Lake County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law beyond a reasonable doubt.
INCIDENTS
PACKAGE THEFT
- Someone stole a delivery from an online retailer to a home in the 400 block of Central Avenue at some point on Nov. 5. The delivered item was valued at $2 and the theft was reported four days later.
- A FedEx package sent from a jewelry company in India to Swiss Fine Timing, 1915 Sheridan Road, appeared to have been opened and resealed. An 18-karat gold ruby cabochon ring worth $1,700 was reported missing from inside.
VANDALISM

- A PVC window on the upper level of the parking garage at 799 Central Ave. was damaged sometime between 3 p.m. Nov. 6 and 11:30 a.m. Nov. 9.
- On Nov. 10, police were called to document green and black spray-painted graffiti depicting genitalia, faces and various words on the pedestrian underpass in the 1600 block of Deerfield Road.
- Gang-related graffiti was found on the lower level of the parking garage at 799 Central Ave. around 5 p.m. Nov. 13.
- A blue, six-pointed star was discovered spray-painted near the east side entrance to the skate park at Sunset Woods Park, 1801 Sunset Road, during a foot patrol on the evening of Nov. 29.
SHOPLIFTING
- Three unidentified women fled together in a white Infiniti after stealing about $5,700 worth of perfume from the Ulta Beauty at 135 Skokie Valley Road prior to 1 p.m. on Nov. 11.
- During an inventory check on Nov. 14, staff at Binny's, 153 Skokie Valley Road, discovered someone had stolen five bottles of Hennessey worth nearly $280 combined. Officers determined a man in a wheelchair had been seen hiding bottles and leaving the store around 12:30 p.m. Nov. 13.
- Around 8:15 a.m. on Nov. 18, an unidentified thief stole a silver Hero7 Go Pro camera by scanning other items at the self-checkout and walking out of the store. He left in a silver Dodge Charger.
- Four unidentified women or girls tried to steal various cosmetics from the Walgreens, 655 Elm Place, prior to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 23. When employees noticed the theft attempt, they left without taking anything.
PHONE THEFT
Someone stole a Samsung S7 cell phone from a home in the 2700 block of Skokie Valley Road sometime around Oct. 29, police were told on Nov. 10.

WALLET THEFT
Someone stole $80 in cash and two credit cards from a wallet that was left inside a car when it was brought in for service at Gregory Hyundai, 490 Skokie Valley Road, on Nov. 5. Between Nov. 9 and Nov. 12, someone made fraudulent charges on the stolen card at a series of businesses outside of Highland Park including Amazon, Walgreens, 7-Eleven, O'Reilly's Auto Parts and a lawn and garden store.
CAR BURGLARY/CREDIT CARD FRAUD
Someone stole a wallet from an unlocked black BMW parked in the 700 block of Highland Place during the night of Nov. 16 or early morning of Nov. 17. Fraudulent charges were later discovered on credit cards that had been inside.
ASSAULT/BATTERY
Around 9 a.m. Nov. 17, police got a complaint about a motorist near the intersection of Green Bay and Lake Cook road that ended with a fight involving a knife and a baton and two men in the 800 block of St. Johns Avenue. Prosecutors approved a felony warrant involving two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon. Lance J. Cutler, 59, of the 1000 block of Sheridan Road, Highland Park, was arrested Nov. 23 on charges of aggravated assault and unlawful use of a weapon, according to police and the sheriff's office. Police said another driver reported Cutler followed them from Glencoe, accosted them about their driving and assaulted them with a knife and baton.
SMASH-AND-GRAB
Someone smashed a window of a white Dodge Ram pickup parked in the lot at 1221 Lake Cook Road and stole a Digitrak F5 Falcon utility locating tool worth more than $21,000. In addition to the rear driver's side window damage, the driver's side door lock also appeared damaged by a prying tool.
BATTERY AT EATERY
Two customers at the Thornton's, 55 Skokie Valley Road, got into a fight around 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 18. A man in his 20s wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, jeans and yellow athletic shoes struck another man in the face before getting into a red Chevrolet Avalanche and leaving east on Lake Cook Road.
THEFT
An unidentified man found sleeping in a shared storage area in the 600 block of Central Avenue was confronted around 7:30 a.m. on Nov. 20 and left in an older green minivan. That afternoon, police were told a leaf blower was missing.
COMMERCIAL BURGLARY
A business at 151 Skokie Valley Road was burglarized between 2 p.m. Nov. 21 and 8 a.m. Nov. 23. Someone managed to get in without forcing entry and stole 12 gift baskets and a JBL speaker worth a combined $2,000.
ARMED ROBBERY
Around 3 p.m. on Nov. 23, a person was robbed at gunpoint inside his car in the 900 block of Deerfield Road during a drug deal. Someone threatened him with a handgun, took the drugs by force and fled the area on foot. The incident was reported the following day. No description of the robber was immediately available from police, who said they had identified a suspect in the case.
STOLEN CAR
Around 1 p.m. on Nov. 29, police were told a 2014 red Volkswagen convertible was stolen from a parking lot in the 1800 block of Green Bay Road. Its owner told police the car was locked, and they heard an alarm that may have been from their car. Credit cards and a workout bag were among the items stolen along with the car.
ARRESTS
Justo J. Soto, 34, of the 3000 block of 27th Street, Zion, was arrested around 4:15 a.m. Nov. 9 following a traffic stop near the intersection of Skokie Valley and Old Elm roads. He was charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol — third or subsequent time, aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol — with a revoked license, driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater, driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a license suspended or revoked for multiple DUIs. He was also issued citations for speeding more than 35 mph above the limit and improper lane usage.
Daniel A. Uriarte, 26, of the 5000 block of West 31st Place, Cicero, was arrested around 9 a.m. Nov. 10 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a suspended or revoked license following a traffic stop in the 2700 block of Skokie Valley Road. Police also issued him a citation for use of unsafe tires.
Anthony R. Codd, 29, of the 2400 block of Arrington Way, North Chicago, was arrested around 12:45 a.m. Nov. 16 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving without ever having been issued a license following a traffic stop at Skokie Valley and Clavey roads. He was also issued citations for illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol by a driver, improper lane usage and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.
Heather A. Kobart, 45, and Oliver Darryl, 39, both of the 5000 block of West Addison Street, Chicago, were arrested at the CVS Pharmacy, 1539 Clavey Road, around 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 20 and charged with felony retail theft.
Lee Sungguen, 57, of the first block of Birchwood Road, Northbrook, was arrested around 9 p.m. Nov. 21 and charged with criminal damage to property in connection with damage to a sign following a dispute at Happy Sushi, 561 Roger Williams Ave.
Aniya Evon Butler, 20, of the 2000 block of West Forest Avenue, Round Lake, was arrested around 5 a.m. on Nov. 22 and charged with interference with police officers and driving with a suspended or revoked license following a traffic stop in the 1200 block of Lynn Terrace. She was also issued citations for speeding more than 35 mph above the limit and illegal transportation of alcohol by a driver.
Sandra Leyva, 21, of the 2600 block of South Tripp Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around 4 p.m. on Nov. 23 and charged with two counts of burglary, two counts of retail theft — one of which is a felony — and fugitive from justice after police determined she stole thousands of dollars worth of cosmetics from the Walgreens at 655 Elm Place on multiple instances in October and obtained a warrant for her arrest.
Jesse P. Gloria, 50, of the 8800 block of Crawford Avenue, Skokie, was arrested around 5:15 a.m. Nov. 24 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop on Marquette Road north of Lake Cook Road. He was also issued a citation for improper lane usage.
A 20-year-old Chicago man was arrested and charged with driving with a revoked license around 5:45 p.m. Nov. 29 following a crash investigation in the 700 block of Green Bay Road. He was also issued citations for failure to reduce speed and driving an uninsured motor vehicle.
