A colony of Bank Swallows has built nests at Rosewood Beach, something uncommon in this area, according to the Bird Conservation Network.

The swallows were spotted raising their young on a wall of sand created by ravine water flowing through the beach this week by the Park District of Highland Park.

The Bird Conservation Network notes the swallows usually nest in banks or cliff, but are frequently found near water.

“The Rosewood sand bank was anticipated to form as the ravine channel finds its natural ‘delta’ and Native Beach Grass planted atop and throughout the beach areas will get established and help hold the sand in place,” said Rebecca Grill, Natural Areas Manager for the Park District of Highland Park. “The bank will continue to change over time, in the meantime, we are happy that we have provided the kind of nesting structure these acrobatic birds enjoy.”
