Bulls Legend Toni Kukoc Takes Loss On Longtime Highland Park Home

The former Chicago Bulls player's 5,000-square-foot house in the Hybernia subdivision sold last week for well under its 1993 sale price.

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — Former Chicago Bulls forward Toni Kukoč and his wife Renata last week sold their longtime Highland Park home for $920,000. They purchased the property — the original model in the Hybernia subdivision — shortly after the Olympic silver medalist signed his first NBA contract in 1993.

That deal was worth an estimated $17.6 million over eight years, the equivalent of more than $31.4 million in 2020 dollars. The Kukočs spent just under $1.2 million on the recently built home, the equivalent of about $2.1 million when adjusted for inflation.

Kukoč, 52, went on to win three NBA championships in seven seasons with the Bulls. In 1996, he was awarded the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year award, and, after a successful career representing his native Croatia, was inducted into the international basketball federation's FIBA Hall of Fame in 2017. Since 2015, he has been a special advisor to Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf.

The 5,000-square-foot, six-bedroom home is the original model in the Hybernia subdivision. It sits on a 0.24-acre lot with a pond in the backyard. It includes floor-to-ceiling windows looking out from the living room into the rear yard.

The 14-room home has a private den, office and bedroom on the first floor, with four more bedrooms upstairs. It includes five full bathrooms and a fully finished basement with a custom wet bar and exercise room and additional bedroom. The back patio features a hot tub and outdoor grill, and the attached garage has room for three cars. The roof was replaced in 2014, according to its listing.

After the house was first listed 18 months ago, the price was reduced to $1.1 million before being pulled off the market from October 2019 to June 2020. It was relisted in June with a $1 million asking price, and an offer was accepted in August, according to public listing records.

According to Lake County records, the home's estimated market value is less than $750,000, and its annual property tax bill is about $19,000. Public records do not identify the home's new owners.

The Kukočs will remain Highland Park residents, the listing agent told the Chicago Tribune, which first reported the sale.

Following the end of his 13-year NBA career, Kukoč has been an active golfer, telling Chicago District Golfer earlier this year that he plays at least four times at week. He has won an amateur championship in Croatia and reportedly competes with former teammate Michael Jordan whenever he is in town.

"I need a chiropractor after because if he’s here, we play all day," he told ESPN in 2014. "Because of my hip and back, I get a little stiff. But it’s fun. You’re talking a little trash, you’re talking memories, you have a cigar, just walking when it’s nice outside. So it’s all great and fun and you’re playing golf, so what’s better than that?"
