HIGHLAND PARK, IL — The following information comes from the Highland Park and Highwood police departments and public records as a record of incidents reported to the police and of those arrested by police. Criminal charges represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Lake County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law beyond a reasonable doubt.

INCIDENTS

HOME BURGLARY
Around 8 p.m. on Oct. 16, a resident returned home to the 3100 block of Summit Avenue to discover a break-in. Someone had forced open the back door and stolen at least $4,000 in cash from inside. It was not known what else may have been stolen at the time of the report.

VANDALISM

  • An officer found graffiti on the COVID-19 Ravinia sign on the left side of the Green Bay Road entrance arch around 6 p.m. on Oct. 12.
  • On the evening of Oct. 14, there were several pieces of gang-related graffiti found on the picnic benches north of the Sunset Woods Park skate park and along the east side of the park along the trail from the Olm Elm Road entrance.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

  • A representative of a real estate agency found the glass shattered on the top window of the west side of the former Equinox health club, 799 Central Ave., on the morning of Oct. 14. Police reported pane of glass had been shattered Oct. 12, the second on Oct. 13.
  • Around 8 p.m. on Oct. 14 two large holes in two separate glass pieces about 1.5 feet wide were found at the train station, 1700 St. Johns Ave.

THEFTS

  • About $35,000 worth of jewelry was stolen from a dresser in a home in the 700 block of Central Avenue at some point between Sept. 14 and Sept. 28, police were told on Oct. 14.
  • Someone stole a scooter from the skate park at Sunset Woods Park, 1801 Sunset Road, prior to about 6 p.m. on Oct. 14. It had purple grips, a red front wheel and a black wheel with stickers on it and was valued at $200.
  • A resident lost their wallet, possibly at a gas station in the first block of Skokie Valley Road on the afternoon of Oct. 14. That evening, they learned someone had been using their card. The reported loss was over $1,000.

SHOPLIFTING

  • Two women stole nearly $2,000 worth of cosmetics from the Walgreens, 655 Elm Place, around 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 17 after hiding them in their large black bags. Police reported it was the same duo who had previously stolen thousands of dollars in makeup from local businesses and fled in a Jeep Cherokee.
  • Around 6:15 p.m. on Oct. 18, a woman was also seen stealing cosmetics from the same Walgreens using the same purses. The estimated loss was unknown.

ARRESTS

Kristin C. Hedberg, 35, of the 11200 block of Cladwell Drive, Huntley, was arrested around 4:30 a.m. on Oct. 13 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop near Skokie Valley Road and Parkside Drive. She was also cited for unlawful use of cannabis by a driver, improper lane usage and speeding.

Jose Arellanez, 34, of the 2700 block of Ezekiel Avenue, Zion, was arrested around 12 p.m. on Oct. 13 and charged with two counts of domestic battery following an incident at the Shell gas station, 10 Skokie Valley Road. Police reported he fled the scene and was later stopped by officers from Winnetka.

Glenn L. Kovitz, 57, formerly of the 1400 block of Chicago Avenue, Evanston, was arrested around 9 a.m. on Oct. 14 in the 300 block of Waukegan Avenue in Highwood and charged with criminal trespass to vehicle. Police reported he was seen on video going into multiple cars in the lot of an auto shop in the 400 block of Sheridan Road and rummaging through them.

Stanley M. Estrada, 42, of the 10000 block of Lacrosse Avenue, Skokie, was arrested around 2:30 a.m. on Oct. 18 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater following a traffic stop near the intersection of Skokie Valley and Clavey roads. He was also issued citations for unlawful use of cannabis by a driver and improper lane usage.
