HIGHLAND PARK, IL — The home stretch of the holiday season has arrived, with the final week of 2019 beginning with Christmas Eve on Tuesday. Communities across the North Shore are putting the final touches on preparations for the Christmas and New Year's holidays. Last-minute shoppers are out picking up presents and ingredients for holiday meals, travelers are taking to the roads and the sky as they head out to meet family and friends for the festive period, while most students are enjoying their winter break through the start of 2020.

First responders and employees at some businesses will be working on Christmas and New Year's, but most area business will be closed to give workers a chance to gather to share the holiday with loved ones.

Post office: Closed

Federal offices: Closed

Banks: Closed

Gas stations: Open

Refuse Collection: No recycling or trash collections will take place on Dec. 25 or Jan. 1. Tuesday collection will go ahead as normal, but pickups scheduled for Wednesday will be delayed by one day for the rest of both weeks.

Highland Park City Hall: City offices will be closed Dec. 25 and Jan. 1 for the Christmas and New Year's holidays.

Highland Park Public Library: Closed from 1 p.m. on Dec. 24 and all day Dec. 25. The library also closes at 1 p.m. on Dec. 31 and will remain closed on Jan. 1.

Highland Park Public Schools: Closed for winter break through Jan. 6.

Park District of Highland Park: The Centennial Ice Arena, the Deer Creek Racquet Club, the West Ridge Center and the Heller Nature Center will be closed Dec. 25. Park district facilities will be operating with special holiday hours through Jan. 1.

Grocery stores: Most will be closed Christmas Day, some will be open and many will have adjusted hours.
