City Seeks More Highland Park Theatre Development Proposals

An exclusive agreement between the Highland Park City Council and Alcyon LLC expired at the end of February, and city officials are now looking for new ideas to renovate the closed movie house.

The Highland Park City Council will resume hearing from developers interested in taking on the Highland Park Theatre after an exclusive agreement with Alcyon LLC expired at the end of February, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Alcyon LLC proposed replacing the city-owned Highland Park Theatre and its adjacent parking lot with a . The proposal included 45 residential condominium units, 10,000 square feet of retail/commercial use, and a 500 to 600 seat theater/mixed‐media center.

City council members expressed reservations with Alcyon's proposal to Patch in February, specifically with the millions of dollars in subsidies the developer sought from the city and the proposed additional retail space.

"What is not clear to me is why it is necessary to have six stories of condos and additional retail space," Councilman Tony Blumberg said. "If we already have some empty retail space, they are now going to challenge existing property owners further to fill the space."

Mayor Nancy Rotering told the Chicago Tribune that the city is now open to other groups that are interested.
