HIGHLAND PARK, IL — The following information comes from the Highland Park and Highwood police departments and public records as a record of incidents reported to the police and of those arrested by police. Criminal charges represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Lake County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law beyond a reasonable doubt.

INCIDENTS

SHOPLIFTING ATTEMPT
A man in a Chicago Cubs sweatshirt took a basket full of allergy relief medication into the bathroom at the Walgreens, 655 Elm Place, prior to about 9:30 p.m. on May 8. Staff retrieved the basket and the man left without stealing anything.

HOME BURGLARY
Someone broke into a home in the 1900 block of Spruce Avenue around 9:30 p.m. on May 9 by prying open a glass sliding door. The home was ransacked but nothing was found to be stolen at the time of the report.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
One of the people involved in a dispute on the afternoon of May 10 drove through the front lawn of a home in the 900 block of Green Bay Road, causing an estimated $600 in landscaping damage.

COMMERCIAL BURGLARY
Someone burglarized an unspecified business in the 400 block of Central Avenue during the night of May 11 or the morning of May 12 after the rear door was left unlocked. About 20 pounds of steak, two bottles of vodka, two metal cash boxes and various peppers and onions were reported stolen.

STOLEN CAR
Around 8 p.m. on May 12, someone stole a black BMW that may have had the keys inside from the parking lot at the Target, 2099 Skokie Vallye Road. The car was found about an hour later abandoned in Hammond, Indiana.

BIKE THEFT
A bike worth $400 that had been left unlocked outside the Walgreens, 632 Rogers Williams Ave., was stolen on the afternoon of May 14. It was later found abandoned behind the bushes south of the store and returned to its owner.

ARRESTS

Benjamin Lopez-Sayago, 41, of the 300 block of Bloom Street, Highland Park, was arrested around 10:15 a.m. on May 3 on a warrant stemming from an incident on April 23, when he is accused of kicking in the door of a home and punching a person. He faces one count of home invasion, one count of criminal trespassing to a residence with a person present and two counts of domestic battery.

A judge ordered Lopez-Sayago held at Lake County Jail in lieu of the $30,000 cash portion of his bond.

Susan M. Filkin, 57, of the first block of Westover Road, Highwood, was arrested around 10:30 a.m. on May 5 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop in the 1800 block of Deerfield Road. Officers also issued her citations for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and using a cell phone while driving.

Dorshae T. N. Harris, 25, of the 4200 block of South King Drive, Chicago, was arrested around 6:30 a.m. on May 8 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater and driving without a valid license. Officers also issued her a citation for improper lane usage.

A 61-year-old Chicago man was arrested around 5:30 p.m. on May 8 and charged with driving with a suspended or revoked license and cited for failure to yield at an intersection and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Robert B. Powell, 23, of the 1500 block of Museum Drive, Highland Park, was arrested around 8:30 a.m. on May 10 after turning himself in to the Highland Park Police Department on a warrant for two counts of possession of a firearm with a firearm owners identification card.

George O. Davis, 41, of the 17000 block of Pine Court, Hazel Crest, was arrested around 11:15 p.m. on May 11 after a three-car crash with injuries on Route 41 just north of Park Avenue West. Officers reported his car was headed south when it jumped in the median and struck the oncoming cars. Davis was charged with five felonies: aggravated driving under the influence — 3rd or subsequent offence, aggravated DUI — with a suspended or revoked license, aggravated driving with a suspended or revoked license, repossession of a controlled substance and possession of 100 to 500 grams of cannabis. He was also charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence of a combination of drugs and alcohol and ticketed for improper lane usage. A judge ordered him held at Lake County Jail in lieu of the $7,500 cash portion of his bond.

A 53-year-old Chicago man was arrested shortly before midnight o May 14 and charged with driving with a suspended or revoked license following a traffic stop at Skokie Valley Road and Park Avenue West. He was also ticketed for not having tail lights.

Bilah M. Castleberry, 27, of the 3500 block of West Arthington Street, Chicago, was arrested around 4 a.m. on May 15 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater following an investigation into a one-car accident in the 3200 block of Skokie Valley Road. Officers reported Castleberry drove into a median and cited him for improper turn.

Michael A. Armstead, 53, of the 100 block of West Division Street, Chicago, was arrested around 9:45 p.m. on May 15 and charged with disorderly conduct in connection with a dispute that began in Sunset Park and concluded in a parking lot in the 700 block of Central Street.

Andrew Navarro Jr., 24, of the 3400 block of Ann Street, Park City, was arrested around 4:15 a.m. on May 16 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater following a traffic stop near the intersection of Skokie Valley and Half Day roads. He was also issued citations for failure to signal, improper lane usage and speeding between 26 and 34 mph above the limit.

Raul Tolentino Gonzalez, 26, of the 200 block of Highwood Avenue, Highwood, was arrested around 1:45 a.m. on May 17 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a valid license following a traffic stop in the 2300 block of Green Bay Road. He was also issued citations for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, improper lane usage, disobeying a stop sign, speeding 26 to 34 mph above the limit and illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol.
