Chicago-based architects George and William Keck designed hundreds of affordable and pioneering modernist homes between the mid-1930s to the late 1970s, many of which were build on the North Shore. Known for their use of glass, steel and passive solar design, the brothers' firm gained fame from the Century of Progress Exposition's House of Tomorrow exhibit. The firm's solar homes, showcased first in 1940 in Wisconsin and Glenview, could maintain indoor temperatures without additional heating and saved up to 20 percent on energy costs.
