Patch: What attracted you to the line of work you’re in, and how did you get started?
Levy: By my sophomore year in college, I recognized the need to pick a major. I considered the courses I really enjoyed, which was easy. Child and Family Studies became my focus, since classes fascinated, engaged me and left me feeling like I could love my career. After graduation, I taught preschool for a year before applying to graduate school. My interest in learning about the human mind, behavior and our interactions with each other continued to grow. My practicum allowed me to put my learning to the test with hands-on experience. I didn’t mind staying at the practicum site after hours, since I left feeling invigorated from making a difference for somebody. After graduate school, I would have practiced anywhere. I just wanted to get started. I cold-called several private practices on a whim, and happened to get a call back from a psychologist who was looking to take someone under his wing. I followed his lead and learned how to get connected in the community. We have built our practice together over the last decade, adding clinicians who generally share our belief that brains are not broken, but for whom the human experience needs some healing.
Patch: If you had to sum up your business mission to a stranger in five words, what would those words be?
Levy: Holistic, integrated, collaborative, fresh, dedicated
Patch: What’s the biggest challenge or most difficult moment you’ve faced in your job?
Levy: The biggest challenge I have faced at my job is dealing with insurance companies.
Patch: What’s the most satisfying part of your job?
Levy: The most satisfying part of my job is when a guarded child or teenager realizes they can trust me and truly opens up. I feel deeply honored to be let into the intimate details of people's lives.
Patch: How would you say your business or organization distinguishes itself from the others?
Levy: My practice distinguishes itself from others because it’s like the “mom’n pop shop” of psychological practices. Many offices these days are like factories. We pride ourselves in establishing a genuine connection from the first phone call. Because we have no receptionist, clients often feel taken care of from the moment they first contact us.
Patch: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given when it comes to success?
Levy: The best piece of advice I have been given when it comes to success is “to throw everything at the wall and see what sticks.”
Patch: Are there any new projects or endeavors you’re working on that you’re extra excited about?
Levy: I have been trying to get my toilet training consultation services off of the ground. After successfully training my three children and with my background in psychology, it was a natural fit. I help parents understand the psychology behind what prevents them and their children from successfully reaching this important milestone.
