HIGHLAND PARK, IL — The following information comes from the Highland Park and Highwood police departments and public records as a record of incidents reported to the police and of those arrested by police. Criminal charges represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Lake County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law beyond a reasonable doubt.

INCIDENTS

THEFTS

  • Someone stole about $28,000 worth of silver cups from a home in the 1700 block of Meadow Lane between late May 2000 and early April 2021, police were told on June 21.
  • A purse containing a credit card, identification and about $1,700 in cash was stolen from a company-owned vehicle, possibly while parked in the 1200 block of Glencoe Avenue between 1:15 p.m. April 19 and 2:15 p.m. April 20, police were told on June 22.
  • Someone stole $500 in cash from inside a wallet while it was in a possibly unlocked locker at LA Fitness, 115 Skokie Valley Road.
  • A Worx lawnmower worth about $1,300 appeared to have been stolen from a front yard in the 900 block of Marion Avenue at some point between 5 and 6 p.m. on June 27.

BIKE THEFT
Someone stole a Trek bicycle worth $700 that had been locked up in the 1700 block of Central Avenue between 6 a.m and 4:30 p.m. on June 23.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
At some point between 1:45 and 6 p.m. on June 21, someone damaged the windshield of a car parked in the lot of the LA Fitness, 115 Skokie Valley Road.

SHOPLIFTING
A man stole a $10 bottle of Svedka vodka from the Walgreens, 655 Elm Place, at some point prior to about 7:45 a.m. June 25.

PORCH PIRACY
Someone stole a package delivered by an online retailer to the 1300 block of Ridge Road between 9:12 and 11:30 p.m. on June 26. The retailer sent an email confirming the delivery of the package, which contained $36 worth of mason jars.

ARRESTS

A 44-year-old Chicago man was arrested around 9:15 a.m. on June 21 and charged with driving with a suspended or revoked license following a traffic stop at Oxford and Deerfield roads. He was also issued a citation for operating a vehicle while using an electronic communication device.

Jeffrey A. Waskin, 39, of the 1900 block of Richfield Avenue, Highland Park, was arrested around 7:15 p.m. on June 21 and charged with domestic battery after police were called to his home for a report of a dispute there.

Fernando Mendoza, 37, of the 1000 block of Central Avenue, Highland Park, was arrested around 5 p.m. on June 22 and charged with retail theft after police were told he stole $13 worth of liquor from the CVS Pharmacy, 2000 Skokie Valley Road.

Sarah E. Zaute, 47, of the 100 block of Heathrow Court, Lake Bluff, was arrested around 5:15 p.m. on June 23 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater and endangering he health of a child after police were dispatched to a complaint about a driver at the Target, 2099 Skokie Valley Road. Officers reported watching her exit the parking lot improperly and run a red light and a stop sign before pulling her over in the 2200 block of Skokie Valley Road. Zaute was also issued citations for disobeying a traffic control device, disobeying a traffic sign and disobeying a red light.
