North Shore Weather: Lake Effect Snow Warning In Effect Until 4 P.M.

First significant snowfall of the year continues, lake effect snow warning continues into afternoon: NWS

WINNETKA, IL — A second band of lake effect snow is passing over Cook and Lake County Tuesday morning. The National Weather Service has issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning, which it said will remain in effect until at least 4:00 p.m. this afternoon.

The largest accumulations of lake effect snow are expected to be between five to ten inches, with a few spots seeing larger amounts and areas farther to the west with a bit less, according to the NWS.

As snow continues throughout the day, blustery, northerly winds are expected to gust as high as 20 mph, rising to 30 mph in the evening. After dark, chance of snow will drop to about 30%, with a low near 15 degrees, NWS said.

The NWS has also issued a hazardous weather outlook for the area, citing significant snow risk and limited excessive cold risk. It predicted one to two inches of snowfall per hour, based on the history of the bands of lake effect snow passing through the area as the risks shift toward Northwest Indiana later in the evening.
