Long-Lost Cat Reunited With Owner After Microchip Check: Blotter

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — The following information comes from the Highland Park and Highwood police departments and public records as a record of incidents reported to the police and of those arrested by police. Criminal charges represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Lake County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law beyond a reasonable doubt.

INCIDENTS

THEFTS

• Around 4:45 p.m. on April 25, a male and female thief selling gold chains and rings near Green Bay Road and Skokie Avenue coaxed someone into taking their chain off in order to purchase merchandise, police were told. The victim paid $20 for two chains and four men's rings before the female jewelry vendor stole his chain. No further information about the suspects was provided.
• Catalytic converters were stolen from two Ford pickup trucks parked in a lot in the 1500 block of Old Deerfield Road during the night of April 29 or early morning hours of April 30. One of the converters was found lying next to the truck.
• Two men in their 20s stole about $2,300 worth of perfume from the Ulta Beauty store at 135 Skokie Valley Road before fleeing prior to 1:30 p.m. on April 30.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

• Someone damaged an ATM at the train station, 1700 St. Johns Ave., cutting one of its two rear cords, sometime between the night of April 23 and the morning of April 26. Officers also noticed it appeared someone had tampered with two vending machines in an attempt to rip them from the wall, but they remained undamaged.
• Someone spray-painted graffiti along the path near Highland Park Recreation Center at 1207 Park Avenue West, about halfway between Park Avenue and Half Day Road, at some point prior to 3:15 p.m. on April 28.

CAT RECOVERY
A cat named Sammy, reported missing from Cherry Lane on July 7, 2020, and believed to have been stolen, was reunited with its owner after being dropped off at Heartland Animal Shelter in Northbrook on April 24. Police said shelter staff discovered Sammy's microchip, allowing the cat to return home after nearly a year. Read more...

ARRESTS

A 21-year-old Waukegan woman was arrested around 9:30 p.m. on April 20 and charged with speeding 35 mph or more above the limit following a traffic stop near the intersection of Half Day and Skokie Valley roads.

Enrique E. Nava, 21, of the 200 block of North Ridgemoor Avenue, Mundelein, was arrested around 2:15 a.m. on April 21 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater after an officer found him slumped over behind the wheel of his car in the 3300 block of Skokie Valley Road. Officers also issued him a citation for illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol by a driver.

Luis Angel Gonzalez, 21, of the 3100 block of North Springfield Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around 1 a.m. on April 24 following an investigation into a two-car traffic crash near the intersection of Deerfield and Skokie Valley roads. No one was injured, but Gonzales was charged with two counts of unlawful use of a weapon, two counts of driving under influence of alcohol and one count of unlawful use of cannabis by a driver. He was also issued a citation for improper lane usage.

Jessica Bernat, 25, of the 100 block of Autumn Court, Buffalo Grove, was arrested around 6 p.m. on April 25 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater. She was also issued citations for improper lane usage and following too closely.
