Mid-Century Highland Park Home in Jeopardy

Local landmark status sought; builders plan to redevelop site.

A well-known preservation consultant is nominating the home at 1021 Lake Cook Road as a local landmark, but the mid-century modern home in Highland Park designed by architect Edward Dart may soon face the wrecking ball anyway.

“This house is significant enough that I nominated it for landmark consideration without the owners’ consent,” Benjamin told the Highland Park City Council Jan. 26. “I wouldn’t be doing this if I didn’t think it was really that important.”

The Chicago Tribune reports the home’s owners, Donald and Patsy Mintmire, no longer occupy the dwelling and have tried for years to unload it off the market.

The property, along with an adjacent one at 1005 Lake Cook Road, is under contract with a developer who is putting together plans for the redevelopment of the entire site.

The Highland Park City Council has the final say on landmark designations, even if they are nominated without the owner’s consent.
