Model U.N. Takes 2nd at National Conference

Highland Park High School Model UN sponsors Joe Brysiewicz and Lindsey Choy wish to extend congratulations to Model UN Presidents Tess Levin (’13) and Elliot Weiss ('13)  and the entire Model UN team for their 2nd place finish (Award of Excellence) at the 39^th Annual National High School Model United Nations (NHSMUN) Conference in New York City.

Furthermore, in an HP first, the team took third place (Award of Merit) in the newer category of Research & Preparation. Representing Germany, Burundi and the United States, students joined over 2,000 high school students from countries around the world for four days of debating international crises and drafting multilateral resolutions. The conference included opportunities to attend a mission briefing with an ambassador at the German embassy in New York and closing ceremonies at the United Nations complex. 

In addition to the team's excellent finish, many HPHS delegates received individual honors. Drew Gerber (’14) achieved 1st place (Delegate of Distinction) for his performance as a Justice of the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Nika Arzoumanian ('13) and Jacob Rich ('14) achieved 2nd place (Delegates of Excellence) for their work in the Security Council. 

Many other members of the Highland Park team delegation received NHSMUN’s individual honor of speaking for or against their particular committee’s resolution at the plenary session held in the United Nations complex, including Alex Goodman ('15), Sara Harris ('14), Mollie Leavitt ('14), Jeremy Reich ('14), Tess Levin ('13), Isa Spoerry ('15), Sharon Svetov (’15), and Suzanne Warshell ('14). 

All HPHS members represented Highland Park High School admirably through their dedicated preparation in the past few months and hard work during the conference.
