Dr. Edward W. Bermes, Jr. PhD FACB, 88, passed away surrounded by his loving family on February 16, 2021, in the comfort of his home. Devoted husband of the late Patricia Anne Bermes; loving father of Kathy, (Michael) Onori, Edward Bermes III, Mark (Jeanine) Bermes, Alicia Bermes, and the late Christopher (Rebecca) Bermes; cherished grandfather of Brandon Onori, Nicholas Joebgen, Miranda Bermes-Goller, Brett, Brooks, Carly, Peter, Emily, Matthew, Edward & Jake Bermes; proud great grandfather of Claire Gland; dear brother of Madelen Gollogly.
During his tenure (1969-1998) at Loyola University Medical Center he served in many capacities including director of clinical chemistry, co-director of the post-doctoral training program in clinical chemistry, director of clinical laboratories and associate chair of the pathology department.
Many of Dr. Bermes’ professional activities revolved around education. In 1983 Edward W. Bermes, Jr., received the AACC Award for Outstanding Contributions in Education and Training.
He served as president of the Commission on Accreditation in Clinical Chemistry for 8 years. He served as chair of the AACC National Meetings Committee for 6 years and co-chaired two national meetings. He was a member of the board of editors of Clinical Chemistry for 9 years and served on the editorial boards of Annals of Clinical Laboratory Science and Clinical and Applied Hemostasis.
He co-founded the Chicago Clinical Chemist and edited it for 9 years. He has published more than 100 articles and book chapters. His early research covered theoretical and practical work on electrophoresis and expanded to include a wide variety of disciplines, including endocrinology, fetal maturity testing, plasma protein analysis, biological variation, therapeutic drug monitoring, hemostasis and thrombosis, tryptophan metabolism, and laboratory statistics..Read more from N.
