Stanley Tigerman’s ‘Suburban Village’ In Highland Park Seeking Second Owner
WOW House: This award-winning 1988 design suggests multiple "buldings" under shared roofs.
HIGHLAND PARK, IL — Designed by a famed married architectural team and relisted this month for under $1.6 million, this unique, award-winning design aims to offer the feel of a village in a single home.
Known as "Suburban Village," this eccentric home has only ever had a single owner. After the death of a spouse, that owner is now seeking to sell this 5,154-square-foot mansion for $600,000 under its initial listing nearly two years ago.
With a series of asymmetrical rooms under conjoined roofs, the home contains four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a circular library, a spa bath, individualized rooms, a paved-brick street, and a dining room functioning as a village center. There's a pool, a cabana, a rose garden, along with a large patio and two separate two-car garages on a 1.6 acre landscaped lot.

"Suburban Village" was created by Chicago natives and Stanley Tigerman, architect of the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Skokie, and Margaret McCurry, whose designs have been featured in Architectural Digest more than half a dozen times. The business partners were married in 1979 and recently announced the closure of their joint office, Crain's Chicago Business reported.

Plans for the one-of-a-kind home — one of 130 designed by the couple — were drawn up with ways to "overcome the status common to building" in mind, according a description of the concept on the Tigerman-McCurry website:
In addition to a one-bedroom house for a couple with five grown children no longer living at home, the program includes guest quarters and a swimming pool with cabana and changing rooms. The solution replaces the conventional notion of a foyer with a kind of meandering street or plaza, with separate functions organized such that together they form a village. Existing as self-contained spaces on the paved-brick street are a cloakroom and spherical library. The kitchen, dining room, and bedrooms are out-croppings at the edge of the village. Each of these “buildings” has its own color and roof form clad in a different material — standing-seam zinc, glass, asphalt shingles — but within the separate functions spaces are presented conventionally and are symmetrically ordered.

"Suburban Village" was awarded the 1991 Distinguished Building Award from the Chicago chapter of the American Institute of Architects, the 1992 Design Award from the Illinois chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers and the 1993 National American Society of Interior Designers Award, according to its architects.
