Crystal Lake, IL – State Representative Allen Skillicorn (R-Crystal Lake) says the Chicago Sun Times has consistently supported tax increases as a remedy for the state’s financial woes and not surprisingly the paper singled out his opposition to taxes as a reason to endorse his opponent.

In their endorsement of Carolyn Schofield, the Sun Times editorial board wrote, “Skillicorn, for example, most recently stuck to his ‘no new taxes’ stand, even to the point of voting against a motor fuel tax hike that would finance desperately needed road projects in his own district.”

“Since when has it become a negative to honestly lay out your values and principles to voters and then stick to those values when you are elected? I think honesty and integrity is what voters want in their elected officials,” Skillicorn said. “Carolyn Schofield gives lip service to Republican values and principles but then turns around and talks about how important it is to compromise with the Democrats. I have been honest to voters about my views on the issues. I ran my first campaign on opposition to tax increases and I have consistently opposed tax increases. I think Carolyn Schofield should also be honest with voters. Which Republican principles is the great compromiser Carolyn Schofield willing to sell out? Voters know where I stand. What do the left-wing editors at the Sun Times know about Carolyn Schofield that voters don’t know?”

Skillicorn also noted Carolyn Schofield has refused to call on Speaker Michael Madigan to resign.

“I have repeatedly called on my opponent to join me in calling for Madigan’s resignation, but so far she has refused,” Skillicorn said. “The very first vote we take in the Illinois House is the vote for who will serve as Speaker. A big reason why we cannot vote on things like property tax relief or other tax reforms – many of which would have bipartisan support – is because Speaker Madigan has complete control over what bills get voted on. The voters need to know who is going to stand against Madigan’s unchecked power and stand for taxpayers. Why does she still refuse to call for Madigan’s resignation?”
