Top 10 Crimes Committed by Illinois' Inmates

There are nearly 50,000 prisoners under the jurisdiction of the Illinois Department of Corrections, and there are as many reasons for their incarcerations as there are prisoners. But most crimes can be filed under one of 28 broad categories, such as homicide, assault or theft.

Here are the top 10 types of crimes committed by Illinois prisoners in the system as of June 2013, the most recent date for which the information is available, plus the number of offenders who are imprisoned for those crimes.

We also compiled a list of unsolved murders using records maintained by the Illinois State Police, along with ISP and local authorities’ contact information. Here is a list of cold cases dating back to the 1970’s.
