The Top 10 Worst Illinois Tornado Disasters in Recorded History

With it being tornado season in Illinois -- and the other tornado-alley states -- it’s important to remember the dangerous and unpredictable nature of these storms, even with all the advanced forecasting technology being used today.

While the past few tornado seasons have been relatively quiet, there are some interesting trends to note. For example, more twisters have touched down in Illinois outside of the typical March-June peak spring season than within that time period. Sixty-nine percent of confirmed tornadoes between 2012 and 2014 were concentrated within a five day period.

Here are the top 10 worst tornado disasters ever recorded in Illinois, including the tragic Aug. 28, 1990 F5 tornado that tore through the southwest suburbs, resulting in $165 million in damages and hundreds of causalities.
