Union Arbitration Bill Override Fails; See How Your Lawmakers Voted
Chart shows roll call for Senate Bill 1229 both historically and for the veto override.

Illinois House Democrats failed to override Gov. Bruce Rauner’s veto of a controversial bill aimed at blunting Gov. Bruce Rauner’s power in union negotiations.
Democrats managed only 68 of the necessary 71 votes needed to negate Rauner’s veto of Senate Bill 1229, which would have seriously weakened Rauner’s position in the ongoing contract negotiations with AFSCME Council 31, which represents 38,000 state employees.
The vote followed an afternoon of heated debate as Republicans questioned the motivation of the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Mike Smiddy, D-Hillsdale. The bill would have been in effect only for the duration of Rauner’s term and Republicans and Rauner said it was an unprecedented attempt to interfere in an executive branch duty.
