2 Dead After Woman, 27, Crashes Into Pickup On Route 6

A total of five Joliet Fire Department ambulances were responding to Wednesday evening's fiery wreck along Route 6 and Hollywood Boulevard.

JOLIET, IL — A 6-year-old child was pronounced dead at St. Joe's hospital and Sara Altiery, the 27-year-old Joliet woman who was driving the car involved in Wednesday evening's head-on crash along Route 6, died from her injuries Thursday morning, Joliet police said.

Joliet's Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Carey said the wreck involved two vehicles in front of Ecolab, 3001 Channahon Road. The double fatality happened shortly before 6:30 p.m.

A preliminary investigation of the crash determined that a sedan driven by Altiery was eastbound on Channahon Road at which time the vehicle veered into the oncoming traffic lane and collided head on with a westbound pickup truck driven by a 48-year-old Joliet man. The driver of the pickup truck was taken to Silver Cross Hospital and was then flown to Loyola Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Altiery and a 6-year-old boy who was a passenger in her sedan were taken to Amita St. Joseph Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The boy died of his injuries at the hospital and Altiery died on Thursday morning.

Two additional children in Altiery's sedan, girls ages 12 and 7, were taken to Silver Cross Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

This crash remains under investigation by the Joliet Police Department Traffic Unit.
