Joliet Shootings: Nearly Half Of Victims Shot On West Side

About 45 percent of last year's Joliet shootings occurred on the city's west side of the Des Plaines River.

JOLIET, IL — In addition to 15 gun homicides in Joliet last year, another 60 people suffered non-fatal gunshot wounds across the city, according to data obtained from the Joliet Police Department. For many years, Joliet's east side was the hot spot for violent crime, but that is no longer the case anymore.

Last year, 34 of Joliet's 75 gunshot victims, which is 45 percent, were shot on the city's west side.

The third quarter of 2020, the months of July, August and September, were Joliet's most dangerous. Joliet police had 24 non-fatal shooting victims and six homicide victims during that three-month span.

In comparison, Joliet police had 23 non-fatal shooting victims and eight homicide victims during the first six months of 2020.

Violent crime has dropped dramatically across Joliet since November.

In fact, Joliet's last homicide happened Oct. 26. Joliet had only two non-fatal shootings in November and only one in December.

There have been no homicides yet this month. January of 2020 also had no homicides.

The following Joliet police data provides dates, locations, ages and genders for all the non-fatal shootings as well as information for the city's 15 gun homicide victims from 2020.

JANUARY

Four non-fatal shootings, no homicides

April 25: Double homicide, two additional non-fatal gunshot victims, 1100 block of Parkwood Drive. Homicide victims were Treshon Holland, 24, of Naperville and Treveal Barefield, 18, of Joliet. A 17-year-old boy and a 23-year-old woman were also shot inside the second floor apartment unit.

April 26: two gunshot victims, Second Avenue and Richards Street, 30-year-old man and 28-year-old man.
