'Bad Accident On I-80' Update: 1 Hospitalized

Friday night's crash happened around dinner time along the eastbound stretch of Interstate 80, causing a major backup.

JOLIET, IL — The Joliet Fire Department reports that one person was hospitalized in good condition following Friday night's rollover crash involving two vehicles on the Interstate 80 bridge over the Des Plaines River.

Fire Chief Greg Blaskey said the crash happened at 5:10 p.m. along the eastbound lanes.

"Upon arrival, they found one vehicle on its side and the other vehicle upright. All occupants were out of the vehicles and ambulatory upon arrival. The driver of the vehicle on its side refused medical care and the driver of the other vehicle was treated and transported to Amita St. Joseph's Hospital in good condition with back pain," the fire chief said.

The collision is being handled by the Illinois State Police.

Joliet resident Bob Hernandez reported that the car that flipped over along the eastbound stretch of Interstate 80 caused major traffic jams all the way to Larkin Avenue.

Hernandez said that several Joliet fire engines zoomed past him as he was on Center Street and he followed them, discovering the wreck.

Hernandez produced one of his popular Facebook Live videos from nearby.

"Several fire trucks and ambulances from the Joliet Fire Department were racing past me," Hernandez told his followers. "You can see the traffic is all tied up. This is all on I-80. I'm on Route 6, the closest I can get to it."
