Convicted Felon With 2 Guns Crashes Into Tree: Joliet Police

JOLIET, IL — A 29-year-old Joliet man was arrested after Joliet police say he tried to flee a traffic stop on the city's southeast side. During the chase, Darius Montgomery crashed into a tree, and police recovered two guns from his car, police reports show.

Montgomery has been charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a convicted felon, unlawful possession of ammunition, no FOID, aggravated fleeing and eluding a peace officer, obstructing a peace officer and several traffic offenses, police said.

The incident that led to Montgomery's arrest happened around 1:50 a.m. on Thursday near Sherman Street and Fourth Avenue.

"The pursuit ended after the fleeing vehicle became disabled after striking a tree and fence," Joliet Police Sgt. Dwayne English notified Joliet Patch.

Montgomery ran from his car, but officers chased after him and caught him, police said.

After searching Montgomery's vehicle, Joliet police say officers found a 9 mm handgun and a .25 caliber handgun.

Montgomery was released from the Will County Jail on Sunday afternoon after posting 10 percent of his $30,000 bail. Jail records indicate that Montgomery lives in the 800 block of New Lenox Road.
