Drunk Reckless Driver Hits Joliet Squad Car: Police

JOLIET, IL — A reckless intoxicated driver crashed into a Joliet squad car that was already conducting a traffic stop on another vehicle Monday night near Larkin Avenue and Mason Street, according to police. Nobody was hurt.

At the scene, Joliet police arrested 29-year-old Alphanso Carter on charges of aggravated DUI, DUI involving drugs and several traffic violations, reports show.

According to Joliet police, officers learned of a reckless driver shortly before 10 p.m. in the area of Larkin Avenue and Black Road, but patrol units did not immediately locate the driver.

"A short time later, a vehicle matching the description of the vehicle involved in the earlier reckless driving complaint collided into the rear of a Joliet Police squad with its emergency lights activated conducting a traffic stop on a different vehicle at North Larkin Avenue and Mason Avenue," police reported.

Police realized the reckless driver was Carter and he showed signs of alcohol and drug use, reports show.

"Carter agreed to perform sobriety tests, which he failed and was taken into custody without incident," police said.

Carter, who lives in the block of East Cass Street near Joliet's downtown, was booked into the Will County Jail at 12:39 a.m. Tuesday.

By 8:23 p.m., the 29-year-old Joliet man walked out of the Will County Jail after posting 10 percent of his $5,000 bail, records show.
