CREST HILL, IL — The Crest Hill Police Department recently arrested 38-year-old Joliet resident Demetrius D. Barrentine in connection with the non-fatal shooting of a man sitting inside a car in the 1400 block of Pioneer Road.

Many of Crest Hill's shootings happen in that particular block of Pioneer Road, as Joliet Patch has previously reported in recent years.

On Monday, Crest Hill Police Chief Ed Clark told Patch that the victim was shot in the stomach and that he was in stable condition at a local hospital. The violent crime happened around 9:20 p.m. on Feb. 23.

Crest Hill officers learned that a man was shot inside a car and several witnesses gave a description of the gunman running away from the shooting scene.

That night, Crest Hill police set up a perimeter around the neighborhood and officers found Barrentine hiding in the backyard of a house, police said. Police also located a gun in the area, and the gun matched the shell casings found at the shooting scene, Clark said.

Last week, the Will County State's Attorney's Office charged Barrentine with aggravated battery involving a gun, aggravated discharge of a gun and unlawful use of a weapon by a convicted felon.

"This was a targeted, isolated incident," a Crest Hill police news release stated.

Barrentine has remained in the Will County Jail since around 3 a.m. Feb. 24. Jail logs indicate that he lives in the 100 block of Edison Road in Joliet.

His bail was set at $100,000.
