DUI Charge for Man who Plowed into Unmarked Cop Car: Police

Robert Delacruz was driving the wrong direction on the one-way Cass Street Bridge when the accident occurred, Joliet police said.

A Joliet man who drove head on into an unmarked police car last week while going the wrong way over the Cass Street Bridge has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, Joliet police said.

Robert D. Delacruz Jr., 24, 1217 Gage St., was arrested Wednesday after being released from Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, five days after he allegedly collided with a vehicle driven by a Joliet police officer, Capt. Tab Jensen said.

Delacruz sustained a severely broken leg in the accident, which occurred at about 3 a.m. Dec. 13, Jensen said. In Delacruz's car, police found several empty beer cans and a small amount of cannabis, he said.

Both cars were "heavily damaged," but the officer suffered only minor injuries for which he was treated at St. Joe's and released, Jensen said. Delacruz had to be extricated from his vehicle, according to reports.

In addition to DUI, Delecruz was also charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug equipment. He was ticketed for transporting/carrying alcoholic liquor and driving the wrong way on a one-way street.

He was released on a recognizance bond pending a Jan. 28 court hearing.
