Fire Seriously Damages House, Leaves 2 People Homeless

Investigators believe a problem with electrical wiring in a downstairs bathroom could have caused the fire, East Joliet Deputy Fire Chief Kirk Kelly said.

Two people were left homeless Monday after an electrical fire seriously damaged their home at 1327 Parker, near Briggs Street and U.S. 30 in unincorporated Joliet.

The East Joliet Fire Department was able to control the blaze in about 30 minutes, Deputy Fire Chief Kirk Kelly said, but the two-story house sustained heavy fire and smoke damage. The cold temperatures caused minor problems in containing the blaze, but no one was injured, he said.

Department investigators, assisted by M.A.B.A.S. Division 19 and the state fire marshal, determined a problem with electrical wiring in a downstairs bathroom could have caused the fire, Kelly said.

Kelly credited the Homer Fire Deptartment with helping with second-floor ventilation, and said the department was also assisted by firefighters from Lockport, Manhattan, Rockdale and New Lenox.
