Happy Mother’s Day To Dorothy Sanders

"If you met her briefly or knew her for a lifetime, you knew instinctively that this person was special, unique!"

In celebration of Mother's Day on Sunday May 13, we asked Patch readers to write a letter to their mother and let us deliver it. This is Michele Sanders Allcut's letter to her mom:

She touched with love! If you met her briefly or knew her for a lifetime, you knew instinctively that this person was special, unique! Oh, not that she was a great painter, writer, politician or actress (though she possessed all of these traits). For is it not a painter who lets you see all the world’s beauty. Her canvas was your heart. Does not the writer keep you enmeshed in the story as it unfolds. She could keep you enthralled just hoping for more of the story of life to continue. She was definitely a politician to diplomatically allow all to feel she was their best friend, favorite child and the most important person in her life. Acting is merely portraying life as it is. No one was more real yet acted so well as the cruelties of life befell her, and none could see the broken heart and hurt feelings.

She always saw the good, the brightest and the best in people. Allowing life to deceive her was not in her agenda. She faced the hardships, the disappointments and the tragedies with her head up and her two feet on the ground. She worked hard, played hard and plunged ahead to forge a place in this world in her own great way.

She was used, abused and betrayed, yet would not allow herself to be bereft. She believed life to be a gift and her gift to give was love. This she gave freely, abundantly, endlessly and unconditionally! All who met her were exposed and no one escaped who were not infected with this love of hers. Just being with her was a joy. She seemed to emanate joy from her very soul, life a fairy sprinkling her magic fairy dust.

How rare a gift, and God gave her to me as my mother. I always knew I was blessed, even as a small child, kneeling by my bed to say my prayers. I knew. He knew. He understood she was one of his own. True to Him always in her life. She witnessed for Him daily by being kind, loving, forgiving, honest, brave and faithful.

Her name was Dorothy Sanders. She died on September 30, 2000, quietly slipping away from me for a glory she so deserved and which no earthly being could ever give to her. One of the last things she said to me was, ‘God is waiting to hold me in his arms.’ He must have been excited to once again hug one of his finest angels. Thank you, God, for your special blessing that allowed me to be her child.
