I-55 Crash Involved 5 Vehicles: Traffic Reopened
Motorists in the Joliet area had to use alternative roads instead of Interstate 55.

JOLIET, IL — The Illinois State Police District 5 said Friday afternoon that several troopers were at the scene of a rollover crash along Interstate 55 in Joliet involving five vehicles. The crash involved three semi-trailers, one box truck and a car. The wreck happened on I-55 southbound near Black Road around 1 p.m.
Shortly after 3:30 p.m., all lanes of traffic were reopened.

A preliminary investigation indicates the following occurred: Units 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 were traveling on Interstate 55 southbound at Black Road. Unit 1 was traveling in the center lane, Unit 5 was traveling in the right lane while Units 2,3, and 4 were stopped in the center lane due to traffic ahead. The driver of Unit 1, for unknown reasons, failed to stop for traffic ahead and struck Unit 2. The impact from the collision with Unit 1, caused Unit 2 to strike Unit 3, and Unit 3 to strike Unit 4.
The impact from the collision with Unit 2 caused Unit 1 to veer into the right lane and strike the rear passenger side of Unit 5’s Semi-Trailer. Unit 1 continued traveling southbound veering into the ditch on the right side of the roadway before overturning on its side and coming to rest. Units 2, 3, and 4 came to final rest in the center lane. Unit 5 came to final rest in the right lane.
